Voxelotor falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bog Labrador Tea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bog Labrador tea leaves can increase the concentration of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Extracts obtained from different geographical regions in Quebec resulted in differing potency of CYP3A4 induction. Bog Labrador tea might increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), amiodarone (Cordarone), ticagrelor (Brilinta), triazolam (Halcion), and others.

Here's the thing about voxelotor (Oxbryta): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down and clear it. Lab studies suggest that Bog Labrador tea may speed up, or 'induce,' that same enzyme. If that happens in real life, your body could clear voxelotor faster than intended, leaving less of it in your bloodstream.

Why does that matter? Voxelotor works by helping your red blood cells hold onto oxygen in sickle cell disease. If levels drop too low, the medicine may simply not work as well, which is a real concern with a drug you depend on. The good news is this warning comes only from test-tube research, not people, so it's far from proven. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

Oxbryta (voxelotor) is approved to treat sickle cell disease (SCD) in adults and in children as young as 4 years old. It works by targeting the underlying problem in sickle cell disease — the abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on the drug's ability to raise hemoglobin levels. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials showing broader clinical benefit.
