Bromelain and Chlortetracycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Chlortetracycline

Chlortetracycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Bromelain interacts with.

Theoretically, bromelain might increase levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Laboratory research suggests that bromelain might increase the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. However, a study in healthy adults reported no difference in tetracycline plasma levels when a 500 mg dose was taken with or without bromelain 80 mg.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist if you're taking chlortetracycline (Aureomycin) and thinking about a bromelain supplement. The idea on file is that bromelain might help your body absorb a bit more of the antibiotic, which in theory could nudge its levels up. Chlortetracycline isn't a prodrug, so more drug in the bloodstream would simply mean a stronger effect and a slightly higher chance of the usual side effects, like upset stomach, nausea, or diarrhea.

The honest part: this is largely theoretical. A small human study found no real change in tetracycline levels when bromelain was added, so for most people this is a minor concern. Still, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist before pairing them, just to be safe.

About Bromelain

What is Bromelain?

Bromelain
  • Inflammation and swelling
  • Sinus and nasal congestion
  • Digestion support
  • Post-surgery or injury recovery
  • Joint pain
  • Allergic rhinitis

Bromelain is a group of protein-digesting enzymes from pineapple that people take mainly for inflammation, swelling, and sinus problems. Some early studies are promising, but the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It is generally well tolerated short-term, but pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone with a pineapple allergy or bleeding concerns should check with a pharmacist first.
