Drug & supplement interaction

Butcher's Broom + Sarilumab

Sarilumab brand name: Kevzara.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Butcher's Broom and Sarilumab in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Butcher's Broom and Sarilumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sarilumab and Butcher's Broom in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Sarilumab

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Sarilumab is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inducers, immunosuppressants. Butcher's Broom has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being alpha-adrenergic agonists (moderate) and alpha-adrenergic antagonists (moderate) — and none of Sarilumab’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Butcher's Broom and Sarilumab May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

    Butcher's Broom

“Topically, butcher's broom may cause contact dermatitis. A 30-year-old female developed an erythematous, papular, pruritic rash on both legs after applying a cream containing butcher's broom root extract (Fabroven, Pierre Fabre Iberica) to varicose veins for 2 months. The rash spread to the entire body, and the patient had positive patch tests to ethanol extracts of butcher's broom.”

Reported for Butcher's Broom but not commonly for Sarilumab: a fast or pounding heartbeat, high potassium, dehydration and stomach upset.

Effects for Sarilumab come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Butcher's Broom come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 24,738 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Sarilumab that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sarilumab page

“Sarilumab (Kevzara) works by quieting an overactive immune system in rheumatoid arthritis, and most of the supplements on this page push the other way. Immune stimulants such as ashwagandha, astragalus, and American ginseng could in theory blunt the drug's benefit and let joint symptoms creep back.”

Butcher's Broom

  • Varicose veins
  • Leg swelling and heaviness
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Circulation problems

Butcher's broom is a plant extract most often used for circulation problems in the legs, such as chronic venous insufficiency, where some evidence suggests it may help reduce swelling and discomfort. Quality and dosing vary widely between products, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Butcher's Broom is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Butcher's Broom record says about it on its own.

Butcher's Broom: dosing

There is no single official or standardized dose of butcher's broom. Products vary widely in their strength, how they are made, and whether they include other ingredients, which makes it hard to compare them. Many extracts are standardized to a certain amount of ruscogenins, but the right amount depends on the specific product.

About Sarilumab Injection

What Is Sarilumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Kevzara

Kevzara (sarilumab) injection is approved for three conditions. In adults, it treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when at least one other disease-modifying drug hasn't worked well enough or caused intolerance. It also treats polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in adults who haven't responded adequately to corticosteroids or who can't tolerate tapering them.

Kevzara is also approved for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) — a form of childhood arthritis — but only in patients who weigh 63 kg (about 139 lbs) or more. It is not approved for pediatric patients below that weight due to the lack of an appropriate dosage form.
