Aliskiren falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Calamus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking calamus with other antihypertensive medications might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that calamus decreases the rate and strength of the heartbeat, which might lower blood pressure. use with caution.

Here's the basic idea: Aliskiren already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Calamus, in animal studies, seems to slow the heart and ease its pumping, which can also nudge blood pressure down. So if you stack the two, the worry is that they push in the same direction and your pressure could drop too low.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or faint when standing up quickly. I'll be honest with you though, this is mostly theoretical and based on animal research, not solid human data. On top of that, calamus has real safety concerns of its own (it's actually banned from foods here). I'd skip it and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any supplement to your blood pressure routine.

Aliskiren also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme.

Here's the basic idea with aliskiren (Tekturna) and calamus. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aliskiren out. Lab studies suggest calamus may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more aliskiren could linger in your system, which can nudge your blood pressure too low or raise the odds of side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness, or a rise in potassium.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only based on test-tube research, not studies in people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. The bigger issue with calamus is its own safety, since it contains beta-asarone and is best avoided. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Brand name: Tekturna

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
