Here's the simple version: caraway, on its own, may nudge your blood sugar a little lower. When you pair it with metformin, which is already working to bring your sugar down, the two could add up. In theory, that raises the chance of going too low (hypoglycemia), which can feel like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or sudden hunger.

Now, the honest part: this caution comes from animal and lab studies, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. The caraway you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated caraway oil or capsules are where I'd be more careful. If you use those regularly, keep an eye on your blood sugar and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

What Is Metformin Used For?

Brand names: Glucophage, Metformin

Metformin — available as tablets, extended-release tablets, and an oral solution — is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, always as part of a plan that includes diet and exercise.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and the oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Extended-release tablets (including Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release) are approved for adults only. Riomet (oral solution) is approved for adults and children 10 years and older.
