Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your water pill, chlorothiazide (Diuril). Carob is packed with tannins and fiber, and in lab and infant-formula studies it grabbed onto certain minerals and lowered how much got absorbed. The thinking is that the same stickiness could, in theory, blunt how much chlorothiazide your gut takes in if you swallow them at the same moment. Less drug absorbed could mean slightly weaker results, like less help with blood pressure or fluid swelling.

That said, this is only a theoretical, lab-level concern rated minor, so don't lose sleep over it. An easy fix is timing: take your chlorothiazide first, then enjoy carob 30 to 60 minutes later. If you'd like, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

What Is Chlorothiazide Used For?

Brand name: Diuril

Chlorothiazide is used to reduce fluid buildup (edema) linked to conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis (hepatic cirrhosis), and certain kidney disorders — including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. It is also used when edema is caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy.

The oral suspension (Diuril) is additionally approved to treat high blood pressure, either on its own or alongside other blood pressure medications. The intravenous forms — including Sodium Diuril, Chlorothiazide Sodium, and Chlorothiazide injection products — are reserved for treating edema in patients who cannot take oral medication or in emergency situations; these intravenous products are not approved for high blood pressure management.
