Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your Pradaxa (dabigatran). Carob is packed with tannins and fiber, and lab studies suggest those compounds can grab onto things in your gut and slow how much gets absorbed. The worry is that eating a lot of carob around the same time as your dabigatran could lower how much of the medicine your body takes in. Since dabigatran works by thinning your blood to prevent clots, getting less of it could, in theory, make it a touch less protective against a DVT, PE, or stroke.

I want to be honest though: this is rated minor and is based only on lab research, not real patients. A little carob in food likely won't matter. To play it safe, take your dabigatran first and enjoy carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Always run changes by your pharmacist or doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are used in adults to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). They are also used to treat deep venous thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs), to lower the risk of those clots coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

In children ages 8 to under 18, dabigatran etexilate capsules are used to treat venous thromboembolic events (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and to reduce the risk of those clots recurring. Pradaxa Oral Pellets — a separate formulation — are indicated for the treatment and prevention of recurrent VTE in younger children ages 3 months to under 12 years.
