Theoretically, carob might also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and ofloxacin. Carob is full of fiber and tannins, and those can bind up things in your stomach. The concern is that carob might grab onto a dose of ofloxacin and keep some of it from being absorbed. If less of the antibiotic gets into your system, it may not fight your infection as well. Fluoroquinolones like ofloxacin are already known to bind to minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron, so this idea fits how the drug behaves.

The good news: this is only a theoretical, lab-based concern rated minor, so don't panic. An easy fix is spacing them out, taking your ofloxacin first and carob 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Ofloxacin

What Is Ofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic

Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
