Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: carob pods are full of tannins and fiber, which can grab onto things in your gut and slow down how well they're absorbed. The concern with Epclusa (sofosbuvir/velpatasvir) is that eating a lot of carob around the same time could mean your body takes in a little less of the medicine. With a hepatitis C treatment, you really want full, steady drug levels so the virus gets cleared, so even a small dip is worth avoiding.

That said, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on lab and mineral-absorption studies, not real cases with this drug. A normal food amount of carob is unlikely to be a problem, but to be safe, take your Epclusa first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before having carob. Check with your pharmacist if you use it often.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. What Is Sofosbuvir and Velpatasvir Used For?

Brand name: Epclusa

Sofosbuvir and velpatasvir treats chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection caused by genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 — covering all the major strains. It is approved for adults and children 3 years of age and older, whether or not they have cirrhosis (liver scarring).

It is used on its own in patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis (where the liver is scarred but still functioning). In patients with decompensated cirrhosis (more advanced liver disease where the liver is no longer coping), it is used in combination with another medicine called ribavirin. Epclusa is a brand that is also available as oral pellets for younger children.
