Drug & supplement interaction

Cassia Cinnamon + Ruxolitinib

Ruxolitinib brand names: Jakafi, Opzelura.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Cassia Cinnamon and Ruxolitinib in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Cassia Cinnamon and Ruxolitinib

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Ruxolitinib and Cassia Cinnamon in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Ruxolitinib

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Ruxolitinib is filed under 3 classifications — topical drugs, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates, oral drugs. Cassia Cinnamon has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and hepatotoxic drugs (moderate) — and none of Ruxolitinib’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Cassia Cinnamon and Ruxolitinib May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

Reported for Cassia Cinnamon but not commonly for Ruxolitinib: an allergic reaction, liver problems, mouth irritation or sores and seizures.

Effects for Ruxolitinib come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Cassia Cinnamon come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 69,262 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Ruxolitinib that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ruxolitinib page

“Ruxolitinib (Jakafi for myelofibrosis and other blood cancers, Opzelura as a skin cream) is cleared by one liver enzyme, CYP3A4, and that single fact explains nearly all 141 supplements here, which is why this list deserves real caution. Three entries are rated major.”

About Cassia Cinnamon

What is Cassia Cinnamon?

Cassia Cinnamon
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.

Cinnamomum cassia · Lauraceae · Inner bark (and young twigs) · Ground spice, sticks (quills), capsules, tea, extracts, essential oil

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cassia Cinnamon is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cassia Cinnamon record says about it on its own.

Cassia Cinnamon: dosing

There is no official or well-established medicinal dose for cassia cinnamon. Studies have used a range of amounts, but the results are not consistent enough to recommend a specific dose.If you choose to use a supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed them. Because of the coumarin content, it is wise to avoid taking large amounts of cassia cinnamon every day for long periods.

About Ruxolitinib

What Is Ruxolitinib Used For?

Brand names: Jakafi, Opzelura

Ruxolitinib is approved to treat several serious blood and immune conditions in adults, and some in patients as young as 12. It is used for myelofibrosis (a bone marrow disorder that disrupts normal blood cell production), polycythemia vera (a condition where the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells), and two forms of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) — a complication that can occur after a stem cell transplant.

For polycythemia vera, it is specifically for patients who have not responded well to, or cannot tolerate, a medication called hydroxyurea. For chronic GVHD, it is used after at least one or two other treatments have failed.
