Bromocriptine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cat's Claw interacts with.

Theoretically, cat's claw might increase or decrease the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Cat's claw may affect the clearance of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. In vitro research shows that cat's claw can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. In one case report, a patient taking cat's claw (at an unspecified dose) experienced increased serum levels of atazanavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir, all of which are CYP3A4 substrates. Levels returned to normal 15 days after discontinuation of the cat's claw supplement, suggesting inhibition of CYP3A4 by cat's claw. In contrast, animal research suggests that rhynchophylline, an alkaloid contained in cat's claw, induces CYP3A expression and accelerates the metabolism of nirmatrelvir, the active component in the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir combination product.

Here's the situation with these two together. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down bromocriptine and clear it out. Cat's claw can tug on that same enzyme, but the data points in two different directions. In lab tests and one human case, it slowed CYP3A4, which could let bromocriptine build up. Animal research suggests it might speed up that enzyme instead, which could lower bromocriptine levels.

If levels climb, you may notice more nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, or headache. If levels drop, the drug may simply work less well. Honestly, this is mostly theoretical, so don't panic. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially with concentrated supplement doses.

What Is Bromocriptine Used For?

Brand name: Parlodel

Bromocriptine mesylate tablets and capsules (sold as Parlodel and generics) treat conditions caused by too much prolactin in the blood — including missed periods, unwanted breast milk production, infertility, and hypogonadism (low sex-hormone function). They are also used for prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors (adenomas), acromegaly (excess growth hormone), and the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease, often alongside levodopa.

Cycloset — a specific bromocriptine tablet formulation — is separately approved as an add-on to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Cycloset should not be used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
