Here's the concern with pairing ephedra and bromocriptine (Parlodel). Both can tighten up your blood vessels. Ephedra's stimulant compounds (ephedrine and pseudoephedrine) rev up your fight-or-flight system, which narrows blood vessels and pushes blood pressure up. Bromocriptine is an ergot-type medicine that can do something similar on its own. Stack them together and you may get too much of that effect at once.

In real terms, that could mean high blood pressure, a pounding or fast heartbeat, headache, or chest discomfort. This is rated a moderate, likely interaction, though the evidence is on the lighter side. Honestly, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements and we don't recommend it anyway. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything like this.

What Is Bromocriptine Used For?

Brand name: Parlodel

Bromocriptine mesylate tablets and capsules (sold as Parlodel and generics) treat conditions caused by too much prolactin in the blood — including missed periods, unwanted breast milk production, infertility, and hypogonadism (low sex-hormone function). They are also used for prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors (adenomas), acromegaly (excess growth hormone), and the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease, often alongside levodopa.

Cycloset — a specific bromocriptine tablet formulation — is separately approved as an add-on to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Cycloset should not be used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
