Drug & supplement interaction

Cauliflower + Diazepam

Diazepam brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco.

Moderate Interaction
The bottom line Moderate

Cauliflower has a moderate interaction with Diazepam. Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that eating cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, daikon radish sprouts, and cabbage, can increase cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity by 14% to 27%.

Cauliflower and Diazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Diazepam

Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Cauliflower interacts with.

Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that eating cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, daikon radish sprouts, and cabbage, can increase cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity by 14% to 27%. Theoretically, cauliflower might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest scoop: the interaction on file is about cauliflower nudging up an enzyme called CYP1A2. Eating a lot of cruciferous veggies may speed that enzyme along by roughly 14% to 27%. In theory, that could clear a CYP1A2 drug a bit faster and weaken its effect.

For diazepam (Valium), though, this is mostly a non-issue. Diazepam is broken down mainly by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4, not CYP1A2, so cauliflower isn't a good match for the enzyme that handles it. On top of that, the evidence here is preliminary and theoretical, and normal food amounts of cauliflower are very unlikely to change how your Valium works (sedation, calmness, or anxiety relief). Enjoy the veggie, and just check with your pharmacist if you have concerns.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Cauliflower

What is Cauliflower?

  • General nutrition and a low-carb vegetable
  • Source of vitamin C and fiber
  • Antioxidant support
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Part of a heart-healthy diet

Cauliflower is a nutritious cruciferous vegetable that provides vitamin C, fiber, and plant compounds called glucosinolates. As a food it is healthy and safe for most people, but there is no strong proof that cauliflower supplements treat or prevent any specific disease. Enjoy it as part of a balanced diet rather than relying on pills.

About Diazepam

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
