Celery and Iloprost

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Celery interacts with whole categories of medication. Iloprost falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Celery in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Iloprost

Iloprost falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Celery interacts with.

Theoretically, celery root might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
Celery root contains the constituents falcarinol and falcarindiol. Laboratory research suggests that these constituents can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Iloprost doesn't just relax blood vessels in your lungs, it also has a mild blood-thinning side, meaning it can make your platelets a little less sticky. Celery, especially in concentrated seed or oil supplements, contains compounds (falcarinol and falcarindiol) that may do the same thing in lab studies. Stack the two together and, in theory, you might bruise more easily or bleed a bit longer from a small cut.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical. It's only been seen in laboratory tests, never reported in real people, and eating celery as a normal food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. If you'd like to try them, just run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

2 of 2

Iloprost also falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.

Theoretically, celery seed extract might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Clinical research suggests that taking celery seed extract may reduce daytime systolic blood pressure by about 12 mmHg compared to less than 1 mmHg with placebo.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Iloprost (Ventavis) is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes blood vessels. Celery seed extract has been shown in research to nudge blood pressure down too, by roughly 12 points on the top number in one study. So when you put the two together, the lowering effects can stack up.

For someone using Iloprost, that combined drop could leave you feeling more lightheaded, dizzy, flushed, or even faint, especially when you stand up quickly. This is mostly a concern with concentrated celery seed supplements, not the celery you toss in a salad or soup. Since Iloprost is already doing important work for your lungs, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding a celery supplement so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure.

About Celery

What is Celery?

Celery
  • High blood pressure
  • Fluid retention (diuretic)
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Anxiety and sleep
  • Digestive support

Celery is a common vegetable that is also taken as a seed extract or oil supplement, mainly for blood pressure, fluid retention, and joint discomfort. Human evidence for these supplement uses is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Celery is generally safe as food, but concentrated supplements and possible allergic reactions warrant caution.
