Chicory and Tobutamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Tobutamide

Tobutamide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Chicory interacts with.

Theoretically, chicory might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vitro research shows that chicory extracts have antidiabetic effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Tolbutamide (Mobenol) is an older sulfonylurea that lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. The concern here is fairly simple: chicory itself may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect, so stacking it on top of tolbutamide could push your sugar down a little too far. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or feeling unusually hungry or weak.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The evidence comes only from lab and animal studies, so it is theoretical rather than proven in people. A cup of chicory coffee now and then is unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplements are less predictable. If you take both, keep an eye on your readings and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tobutamide page

“Long as this list is, it mostly tells one story, and with Tobutamide (Mobenol), a sulfonylurea that lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, that story deserves genuine care. Most of the 215 moderate entries add to the drug's effect and invite hypoglycemia, the shaky, sweaty, sometimes dangerous low.”

About Chicory

What is Chicory?

Chicory
  • Constipation and digestive health
  • Source of prebiotic fiber (inulin)
  • Coffee substitute
  • Liver and gallbladder support
  • Appetite and blood sugar (traditional)

Chicory is best known as a caffeine-free coffee substitute and as a source of inulin, a soluble prebiotic fiber that may support digestion and regularity. Strong human evidence for most other traditional uses (like liver, gallbladder, or skin conditions) is limited. It is generally well tolerated, but the inulin can cause gas and bloating, and people allergic to ragweed or related plants should be cautious.
