Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chokeberry interacts with.

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this medicine. Lab studies suggest chokeberry might slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, dronabinol could build up a bit more than usual, which in theory might mean stronger effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling more 'high' or out of it.

I want to be honest with you though, this is very much a theoretical concern. The evidence is thin, based mostly on test-tube work and a single case report with a different drug. Everyday chokeberry juice or jam is unlikely to be an issue. If you're taking concentrated chokeberry supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
