ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, doxylamine
acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, doxylamine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut. Because of its porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medicine sitting in your stomach and intestines before your body has a chance to absorb it. With NyQuil (acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and doxylamine), that could mean less of each ingredient actually gets into your system, so you might not get the full fever and pain relief, cough suppression, or sleepiness you were expecting.
This concern is mostly based on how charcoal behaves, not on hard studies with these exact drugs, so think of it as a sensible precaution. An easy fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. If you take NyQuil regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
