Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like the activated charcoal you may have heard of. Its porous, sponge-like surface can grab onto medicine sitting in your stomach and gut before your body has a chance to absorb it. If you swallow it too close to your donepezil, less of the medicine may actually make it into your bloodstream.

Donepezil isn't a prodrug, so this just means you could get less benefit from each dose, weaker support for memory, focus, and daily thinking. The fix is easy: keep them well apart in time, ideally at least two hours between them. This is a theoretical, mechanism-based concern, but spacing the doses is a sensible habit. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.
