Coffee Charcoal and Entrectinib

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Entrectinib

Entrectinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.

Coffee charcoal can reduce the absorption of orally administered drugs and should be separated from oral drug administration by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like other charcoals, with a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut. If you swallow it close to the time you take your entrectinib (Rozlytrek) capsule, it may bind some of the drug before your body absorbs it. That means less medicine actually gets into your bloodstream, and for a cancer treatment you really want the full dose working against those tumor cells.

This concern is based on how charcoal behaves, not on direct studies with entrectinib, so it's theoretical. Still, with a cancer drug it's worth being careful. A safe habit is to keep them well apart in time, and please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before mixing the two.

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Entrectinib

What Is Entrectinib Used For?

Brand name: Rozlytrek

Rozlytrek is used to treat adult patients with ROS1-positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — a type of lung cancer where the ROS1 gene is rearranged — as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Rozlytrek is also approved for adult and pediatric patients older than 1 month with solid tumors that have an NTRK gene fusion (a specific genetic alteration), detected by an FDA-approved test, that have spread or cannot be removed without causing serious harm, and have worsened after prior treatment or have no good treatment alternatives. This NTRK indication was granted accelerated approval based on tumor response rates; continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory trials.
