Here's the practical concern with Lybrel (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel). Like other forms of charcoal, coffee charcoal has a porous surface that can grab onto medicine sitting in your gut. If you swallow it too close to your birth control pill, it may soak up some of the hormones before your body absorbs them. Even a small dip in absorption matters here, because reliable pill levels are what keep you protected against pregnancy and help avoid breakthrough bleeding.

This is a theoretical, pharmacology-based caution rather than something proven in studies, so don't panic. To be safe, keep the two well apart in your day (at least two hours). Please run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor.
