ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Lomitapide
Lomitapide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal. Its porous surface can grab onto medicines sitting in your stomach and intestines, which may keep some of the drug from being absorbed into your bloodstream. Lomitapide (Juxtapid) is taken by mouth, so if you swallow it too close to the charcoal, you may absorb less of it. That could mean a weaker cholesterol-lowering effect, which matters a lot when you're treating HoFH.
This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in the gut, not on direct studies with lomitapide, so it's more of a theoretical caution. To stay safe, keep the two at least a couple of hours apart and check the timing with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
About Lomitapide
What Is Lomitapide Used For?
Brand name: Juxtapid
Juxtapid (lomitapide) is used alongside a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments — including LDL apheresis (a procedure that filters LDL from the blood) where available — to lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is a rare, inherited condition that causes extremely high LDL cholesterol levels from birth.
Juxtapid is approved for use in adults and in children aged 2 years and older with HoFH. It has not been proven safe or effective for other types of high cholesterol, including the more common heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Its effect on heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular events has not been established.
