Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like a sponge in your gut. Because of its porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medications you swallow and keep them from being fully absorbed. With Caplyta (lumateperone), that could mean less of the drug actually gets into your bloodstream, so it may not control your schizophrenia symptoms as well as it should.

Keep in mind this concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves rather than direct studies with this medicine. Still, an easy fix is to separate them by at least two hours. Don't change how you take your Caplyta on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you space things out safely.

What Is Lumateperone Used For?

Brand name: Caplyta

Caplyta (lumateperone) is approved for adults with schizophrenia, depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder (bipolar depression), and as an add-on treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD).

For bipolar depression, Caplyta can be used on its own or alongside lithium or valproate. For MDD, Caplyta is used together with an antidepressant — not on its own as a standalone antidepressant.
