Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Maribavir (Livtencity), your oral medicine for hard-to-treat CMV infection after a transplant. Coffee charcoal acts a bit like other charcoals, with a porous surface that can grab onto things sitting in your gut. If you swallow both around the same time, the charcoal may bind some of the Maribavir before your body absorbs it, meaning less drug gets into your system.

With an antiviral, that matters. Getting too little could weaken how well it controls the CMV virus. The good news is this concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves, not on hard studies. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least two hours. Please run this past your pharmacist or transplant team before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Maribavir page

“Most people taking maribavir (Livtencity) are transplant recipients fighting a cytomegalovirus infection that other antivirals could not control, which means a supplement that drains this drug from the blood is a genuinely serious problem. This list of 143 ingredients deserves real caution.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
