Coffee Charcoal and Oxacillin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Oxacillin

Oxacillin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.

Coffee charcoal can reduce the absorption of orally administered drugs and should be separated from oral drug administration by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: oxacillin is usually given as an injection, so if you're getting it that way, coffee charcoal taken by mouth won't interfere with it. This interaction really only matters for medicines you swallow.

The concern with coffee charcoal is that its porous, charcoal-like surface can bind to substances in the gut. If a drug is taken orally at the same time, the charcoal could soak some of it up before your body absorbs it, leaving you with a weaker dose. For an antibiotic, that could mean less of the drug reaching the infection and a slower recovery. This is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves. To be safe, separate any oral medicine from coffee charcoal by at least two hours, and check with your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxacillin page

“Kidney harm is the first risk to understand with oxacillin (Bactocill, Prostaphlin), a penicillin antibiotic given for serious staph infections. Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca can each damage the kidneys on their own, and combining them with oxacillin risks compounding that harm; both carry major ratings, as does activated charcoal,…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Oxacillin Injection

What Is Oxacillin Injection Used For?

Brand names: Prostaphlin, Bactocill

Oxacillin Injection is used to treat infections caused by staphylococci (staph bacteria) that produce an enzyme called penicillinase — meaning they can break down ordinary penicillin. It targets these resistant staph strains specifically.

It can also be started right away when a resistant staph infection is strongly suspected, even before lab results confirm it. If lab tests later show the infection is caused by a different organism — or one that regular penicillin G would cover — treatment should be switched to a more appropriate antibiotic.
