ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Oxazepam
Oxazepam falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut. That porous, charred surface can grab onto medicine sitting in your stomach and intestines before your body has a chance to absorb it. So if you swallow your oxazepam (Serax) at the same time as coffee charcoal, you may end up absorbing less of the medication.
For oxazepam, that could mean a weaker calming effect, so your anxiety or alcohol-withdrawal symptoms might not be controlled as well as expected. This is based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies, but it's an easy problem to sidestep. Just separate the two by at least two hours, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxazepam page
“The single biggest hazard with oxazepam (Serax), a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety and alcohol withdrawal, is stacked sedation, and this is a list to treat with genuine respect. Nearly two thirds of the supplements and foods on this page add their own drowsiness on top of the drug's, and the worst of them can depress breathing it…”

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments.
