Here's the thing about coffee charcoal: like other charcoal-type products, it has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut, including medications. If you take it too close to your dose of secnidazole, it may soak up some of the drug before your body absorbs it. That could leave you with less antibiotic in your system than you need.

That matters because secnidazole is usually given as a single dose to clear up bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis. If absorption drops, the infection might not fully clear. This concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves, but it's easy to sidestep: take them at least two hours apart, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

About Secnidazole

What Is Secnidazole Used For?

Brand name: Solosec

Solosec (secnidazole) oral powder is used to treat two distinct infections. The first is bacterial vaginosis — an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina — in female patients aged 12 and older. The second is trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, in patients aged 12 and older.

Because trichomoniasis spreads between partners, sexual partners of infected patients should be treated at the same time to prevent reinfection. Solosec should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria or the relevant organism — using antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to drug resistance.
