Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a lot like activated charcoal. Its porous surface can grab onto things in your gut, and that includes the sulfa antibiotics in Neotrizine (sulfamerazine and sulfamethazine). If you swallow them too close together, the charcoal may soak up some of the antibiotic before your body absorbs it, so less medicine gets into your bloodstream.

Why that matters: these drugs only work when they reach the infection at full strength. A weakened dose could mean the infection isn't fully treated. The good news is this is a timing issue, not a reason to panic. Just keep coffee charcoal and your antibiotic at least two hours apart, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
