Here's the thing with coffee charcoal: like other charcoals, it has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut, including medication you swallow. The worry is that if you take it too close to your tamoxifen, it could soak up some of the pill before your body absorbs it, meaning less medicine actually gets into your bloodstream. For a cancer-prevention or cancer-treatment drug like this one, you really want the full dose working for you, so even a partial drop in absorption isn't something to shrug off.

This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on a specific study with tamoxifen, so it's more theoretical than proven. To stay safe, simply separate them by at least two hours. Please check with your pharmacist or oncologist before adding coffee charcoal.

About Tamoxifen

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread) in both women and men, and as adjuvant (after-surgery) therapy for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer — tamoxifen is used after breast surgery and radiation to reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Soltamox (oral solution) is specifically indicated for all of these uses in adult patients.
