Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about coffee charcoal: like any charcoal product, it has a porous, sponge-like surface that can grab onto things sitting in your gut. If you take oral vancomycin (Firvanq) too close to it, the charcoal may soak up some of the medicine before it can do its job, leaving you with less drug where you need it.

That matters because oral vancomycin is usually treating a gut infection like C. diff, and it works right there in your intestines. If the charcoal binds it up, you could get a weaker effect and a tougher time clearing the infection. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves rather than hard studies, but it's easy to sidestep: keep the two at least two hours apart, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand name: Firvanq

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
