Amiodarone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Comfrey interacts with.

Theoretically, comfrey might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents, comfrey can cause hepatotoxic effects, including ascites, cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, hepatomegaly, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.

Here's the concern with pairing these two: amiodarone is already well known for being tough on the liver. It can raise liver enzymes and, in some people, cause more serious liver injury over time. Comfrey, when taken by mouth, carries its own real risk to the liver because of compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Stacking two things that stress the same organ is the worry here.

To be fair, this interaction is theoretical, based on how each acts rather than reported cases together. Still, comfrey should never be swallowed regardless. If you take amiodarone, please skip oral comfrey and check with your doctor or pharmacist, who already monitors your liver while you're on this medication.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
