Here's the thing to know about pairing comfrey with Tavalisse (fostamatinib). Fostamatinib can be hard on the liver on its own. Your care team usually checks liver enzymes (your liver blood tests) while you're on it. Comfrey taken by mouth contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are well known to injure the liver. So the worry is simple: two liver stressors stacked together could add up and raise your risk of liver trouble.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how each works rather than reported cases of this exact combination. Still, comfrey should never be swallowed, and even short-term use on the skin deserves a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist while you're on fostamatinib. Don't change your medication on your own.

Comfrey is a traditional herb used mainly on the skin for bruises, sprains, and joint pain, and some topical products show modest benefit for these uses. What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
