Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, Ritonavir, Dasabuvir
Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, Ritonavir, Dasabuvir falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Comfrey interacts with.
Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents, comfrey can cause hepatotoxic effects, including ascites, cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, hepatomegaly, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know: Viekira Pak is a hepatitis C treatment that already puts some strain on your liver. It carries a warning about raising liver enzymes, and it's processed right in the liver. Comfrey is the concern here because, when taken by mouth, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can genuinely harm liver tissue. Stacking two things that stress the same organ isn't a great idea.
This warning is theoretical, based on how each works rather than reported cases, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with your liver already working hard to clear a hep C infection, I'd avoid swallowing comfrey entirely. Short-term use on unbroken skin is far less risky, but please run any comfrey use past your pharmacist or doctor first.
