Tamoxifen Citrate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Comfrey interacts with.

Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents, comfrey can cause hepatotoxic effects, including ascites, cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, hepatomegaly, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.

Here's the concern with pairing comfrey and tamoxifen: both can be tough on your liver. Comfrey contains natural compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause real liver damage, which is why it should never be swallowed and only used briefly on intact skin. Tamoxifen, while generally well tolerated, can occasionally raise liver enzymes or affect the liver too. Stacking the two could, in theory, add up to more strain on that organ.

To be fair, this warning is theoretical, based on how each works rather than reported cases. Still, since liver problems can be silent at first, I'd skip oral comfrey entirely and check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using any comfrey product while on tamoxifen.

Comfrey is a traditional herb used mainly on the skin for bruises, sprains, and joint pain, and some topical products show modest benefit for these uses. However, comfrey contains compounds that can seriously damage the liver, so it should never be taken by mouth and should only be used on unbroken skin for short periods. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it entirely.

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat estrogen receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in both women and men, and as follow-up (adjuvant) therapy after surgery for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS — an early, non-invasive breast change) following surgery and radiation, tamoxifen lowers the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Both Tamoxifen Citrate tablets and Soltamox oral solution share these indications.
