Comfrey and Testosterone Enanthate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Testosterone Enanthate

Testosterone Enanthate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Comfrey interacts with.

Theoretically, comfrey might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents, comfrey can cause hepatotoxic effects, including ascites, cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, hepatomegaly, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: comfrey contains plant compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can be genuinely hard on the liver, especially when swallowed. Testosterone enanthate (Xyosted) can also occasionally stress the liver, so the worry is that the two together might add up and increase that burden on your liver.

I'll be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than on real cases of people combining them. The bigger point is that comfrey should never be taken by mouth at all, and even on the skin it's only for short use on unbroken skin. With testosterone, your doctor already checks liver and blood tests, so mention any comfrey use to your pharmacist or doctor and let them keep an eye on those numbers.

“Beer and wine both carry major ratings on this list, because heavy alcohol use can compound the strain testosterone enanthate (Xyosted) already places on the liver. That liver theme runs through 38 of the 184 ingredients on file, Siberian cocklebur among them, and with six interactions rated major overall, this page deserves genuine ca…”

What is Comfrey?

Comfrey
  • Bruises and sprains
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Minor wounds and skin irritation
  • Back pain
  • Inflammation

Comfrey is a traditional herb used mainly on the skin for bruises, sprains, and joint pain, and some topical products show modest benefit for these uses. However, comfrey contains compounds that can seriously damage the liver, so it should never be taken by mouth and should only be used on unbroken skin for short periods. Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it entirely.

About Testosterone Injection

What Is Testosterone Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xyosted

Testosterone injections replace testosterone when the body makes too little or none. The label describes this in men with primary hypogonadism (a problem in the testicles) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (a problem with the pituitary or hypothalamus signals).

Testosterone Enanthate Injection is also used to stimulate puberty in carefully selected boys with clearly delayed puberty. It may be used secondarily in some postmenopausal women with advanced, inoperable breast cancer that has spread to the bone, under an oncologist’s direction. Aveed is for hypogonadism in men and is not for use in women.
