Cordyceps and Methyltestosterone Buccal

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

TESTOSTERONE

Why this applies to Methyltestosterone Buccal

Methyltestosterone Buccal falls under TESTOSTERONE — the group Cordyceps interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps and testosterone might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that cordyceps can increase testosterone levels. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Methyltestosterone buccal is a form of testosterone you tuck against your gum. It's already an active hormone, so cordyceps isn't changing how your body breaks it down. The concern here is just additive: in animal studies, cordyceps appeared to nudge testosterone levels up a bit, so taking both at once could, in theory, stack on top of each other.

Keep this in perspective. This is rated a minor interaction based only on lab and animal data, not human studies, so the real-world effect is unclear and likely small. If anything, you'd watch for the usual testosterone effects becoming more noticeable, things like acne, oily skin, mood swings, or fluid retention. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since you're on a prescribed hormone, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding cordyceps.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methyltestosterone Buccal page

“Methyltestosterone buccal (Oreton Buccal, Android 5) is an androgen that can strain the liver on its own, and 38 of the 73 supplements on this list can add to that liver stress, so real care is warranted. Two of the four major entries are alcohol itself, beer and wine, since drinking on top of a liver-taxing drug raises the risk of dam…”

About Cordyceps

What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Athletic performance and stamina
  • Respiratory and lung support
  • Immune support
  • Kidney health support
  • General wellness/anti-aging

Cordyceps is a fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine for energy, exercise performance, and lung and immune support. Human research is limited and mostly low quality, so its benefits are not well proven. It appears generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality varies and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.
