Coriander and Clobazam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Clobazam

Clobazam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Coriander interacts with.

Theoretically, coriander might cause additive sedative effects when taken with CNS depressants.
Evidence from animal research suggests that coriander fruit extract has sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Clobazam already works by calming down activity in the brain, which is why it can make you feel drowsy, foggy, or unsteady. Some animal studies hint that coriander may have a mild sedative effect of its own. Put the two together and the worry is that the sleepy, slowed-down feelings could stack up a bit.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This comes from lab and animal research, not real-world human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. The coriander you sprinkle on tacos or curry is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated extracts or essential oils are where I'd be more careful. If you use those, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clobazam page

“Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan, Frisium) is a benzodiazepine for seizures, so extra sedation is a real safety hazard rather than a nuisance, and that is what most of this list adds. The great majority of these supplements and herbs deepen drowsiness, alcohol in any form among the most serious pairings.”
