Eicosapentaenoic Acid (epa) + Minocycline
Minocycline brand names: Vectrin, Dynacin, Minocin, Minocin IV, Solodyn, and others.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (epa) has a moderate interaction with Minocycline. Theoretically, EPA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Minocycline
Minocycline falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Eicosapentaenoic Acid (epa) interacts with.
In human research, taking EPA has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing fish-oil EPA with minocycline. The interaction in our database is really about EPA's tendency to make platelets a little less sticky, which can mildly raise bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners. Minocycline itself isn't a classic anticoagulant, so for most folks taking it for acne or a routine infection, adding EPA isn't a big concern.
That said, minocycline can occasionally affect blood clotting on its own, and this bleeding-risk note is mostly theoretical. If you're also on an actual blood thinner like warfarin or aspirin, that's where I'd pay closer attention. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Minocycline page
“This is one of the longer interaction lists I review, and with minocycline it earns real care rather than a shrug. Most entries pair this tetracycline antibiotic, taken for acne and other infections, with supplements that raise bleeding risk, and a second sizable group, beer and wine included, can add strain on the liver.”

About Eicosapentaenoic Acid (epa)
What is Eicosapentaenoic Acid (epa)?
- Heart and triglyceride health
- Inflammation
- Mood and depression support
- Joint comfort
- General omega-3 supplementation
EPA is an omega-3 fatty acid found mostly in fatty fish and fish oil, and it is best known for lowering high triglycerides. It may also help with inflammation and mood in some people, but evidence varies by condition. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take blood thinners or have a fish allergy.
About Minocycline
What Is Minocycline Used For?
Brand names: Vectrin, Dynacin, Minocin, Minocin IV, Solodyn, Acnamino MR, Minocin MR, Sebomin MR, Aknemin, Arestin Miscrosperes, Amzeeq, Zilxi
Minocycline is mainly used for infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Oral capsules and tablets, and Minocin intravenous (IV), are labeled for many infections. These include rickettsial infections such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Mycoplasma pneumoniae respiratory infections, chlamydia-related infections, plague, tularemia, cholera and brucellosis (with streptomycin). Some gram-negative bacterial infections are included when lab testing shows the bacteria respond.
Other minocycline products are not for infections at all. Extended-release tablets (including Minolira) treat inflammatory acne lesions in patients 12 and older. Amzeeq foam treats inflammatory acne in patients 9 and older. Zilxi foam and Emrosi capsules treat inflammatory rosacea lesions in adults. Arestin is placed in gum pockets by a dental professional for adult periodontitis.
