Elbasvir, Grazoprevir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Eleuthero interacts with.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research suggest that standardized extracts of eleuthero might inhibit CYP3A4. However, research in healthy human volunteers has found that taking eleuthero 485 mg twice daily for 14 days does not inhibit CYP3A4 drug metabolism.

Here's the gist with Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir) and eleuthero. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process this medication. Lab dish and animal studies hinted that eleuthero might slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let more of the drug build up and possibly raise the odds of side effects like tiredness, headache, or nausea.

But here's the reassuring part: when researchers actually tested eleuthero in healthy people (485 mg twice a day for two weeks), it did not meaningfully block CYP3A4. So this is a mostly theoretical, minor concern, not something seen in real use. Still, since your hepatitis C treatment matters, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding eleuthero.

What Is Elbasvir and Grazoprevir Used For?

Brand name: Zepatier

Zepatier is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or genotype 4 infection in adults and children 12 years of age and older (or weighing at least 30 kg). It works against both the most common strain of HCV (genotype 1) and genotype 4.

Depending on the specific genotype, prior treatment history, and certain viral characteristics, Zepatier may be prescribed alone or combined with another antiviral medicine called ribavirin. Your prescriber will determine the right regimen and duration for your situation.
