Trazodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Eleuthero interacts with.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro and animal research suggest that standardized extracts of eleuthero might inhibit CYP2D6. However, research in healthy human volunteers has found that taking eleuthero 485 mg twice daily for 14 days does not inhibit CYP2D6 drug metabolism.

Here's the gist with eleuthero and trazodone. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down trazodone. In test tube and animal studies, eleuthero looked like it might slow that enzyme down a bit, which in theory could let trazodone build up and lead to more of its usual effects, things like extra drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

But here's the reassuring part. When researchers actually gave eleuthero to healthy people for two weeks, it did not meaningfully change CYP2D6 activity. So this is really a theoretical, low-risk concern. Trazodone is not a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped around. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor.

The good news: when researchers actually gave eleuthero to healthy people for two weeks, it did not meaningfully slow CYP3A4. So this is mostly a theoretical concern rated as minor and unlikely. Still, since trazodone already makes many folks sleepy, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you notice extra grogginess.
