The piece of Actifed Plus ES to focus on here is the pseudoephedrine, which is the decongestant. Pseudoephedrine works by tightening blood vessels, and that is exactly what ergot does too. When you stack two things that both squeeze blood vessels, the effect can add up, which is the concern on file.

In real life that could mean higher blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, headache, or cold hands and feet. The good news is this is rated moderate and rests on anecdotal evidence, so it is more of a caution than a sure thing. Pseudoephedrine isn't a prodrug here, so the worry is added vessel-tightening, not changed drug levels. Keep in mind ergot itself isn't safe as a home supplement. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
