These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ergot interacts with whole categories of medication. Methylphenidate Hydrochloride falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ergot in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Methylphenidate Hydrochloride
Methylphenidate Hydrochloride falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist of this one: both your ADHD medicine and the chemicals in ergot can nudge serotonin activity in the brain. Methylphenidate isn't a serotonin drug in the classic sense, but as a stimulant it raises levels of brain messengers, and ergot alkaloids act on serotonin receptors. Put them together and there's a theoretical chance of too much serotonin signaling.
I'll be honest, this concern rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, so don't panic. Still, if you ever combined them, I'd want you watching for things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shakiness, or confusion. Honestly, raw ergot shouldn't be used at all since it's toxic. Please run any ergot product, including migraine medicines, past your pharmacist or doctor first.
STIMULANT DRUGS
2 of 2Methylphenidate Hydrochloride also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.
Some stimulant drugs include albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), diethylpropion (Tenuate), dopamine, epinephrine, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both ergot and methylphenidate can tighten your blood vessels. Ergot alkaloids are strong vessel-narrowers, and methylphenidate (Quillichew, Adhansia XR) is a stimulant that can raise your blood pressure and heart rate. Stack them together and you may push those effects further than you'd want. Think higher blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, headache, or cold, tingly fingers and toes.
I'll be honest, this is based mostly on anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so it's a theoretical caution rather than something proven. That said, crude ergot itself is toxic and shouldn't be taken at all. If you're using any ergot product, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining it with your ADHD medicine.

About Ergot
What is Ergot?
- Heavy menstrual or uterine bleeding
- Bleeding after childbirth
- Migraine headaches
- Stimulating uterine contractions
Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
About Methylphenidate
What Is Methylphenidate Used For?
Brand names: Quillichew, Adhansia XR
Methylphenidate treats ADHD across many oral and patch products. Age ranges differ by product. Some are approved for children 6 and older, some for children and teens, and some also for adults up to age 65.
Some immediate-release and certain extended-release methylphenidate tablets are also used for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder with sudden, overwhelming sleepiness). Methylphenidate oral solution and chewable tablets are described for attention deficit disorders in children, as part of a total treatment program that includes psychological, educational and social support. Not every product is approved for every use or age group.
