The ingredient I'm focused on here is the pseudoephedrine in your Aleve Cold and Sinus. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that works by tightening up blood vessels (that's how it shrinks swollen nasal tissue). Ergot does something similar, narrowing blood vessels quite strongly. So if you stacked the two together, you could be adding squeeze on top of squeeze. That might show up as a noticeable bump in blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, headache, or cold, tingly hands and feet.

To be fair, this is rated as a possible, moderate concern based mostly on anecdotal reports, not strong studies. Still, ergot itself is genuinely unsafe to use on your own. Please don't combine these without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
