Voriconazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

Here's the simple version. Voriconazole is a strong blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is the same enzyme that breaks down ergot's main chemical, ergotamine. When voriconazole slows that breakdown, ergot can build up in your body and hit harder than expected.

That matters because too much ergot can cause dangerous narrowing of your blood vessels, leading to cold, numb, or painful hands and feet, leg cramps, headache, nausea, and in serious cases reduced blood flow to your limbs. Honestly, raw ergot isn't safe to take on its own anyway, and pairing it with voriconazole makes the risk worse. The evidence here is largely theoretical and anecdotal, but the concern is real. Please don't combine these without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

About Voriconazole

What Is Voriconazole Used For?

Brand name: Vfend

Voriconazole treats several serious fungal infections. Across all available forms — tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) injection — it is used for invasive aspergillosis (a dangerous mold infection), candidemia (Candida fungus in the bloodstream) in patients who are not neutropenic (not severely low on white blood cells), other deep-tissue Candida infections, and serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum or Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded to other antifungal treatments.

Esophageal candidiasis (a Candida infection of the esophagus, the swallowing tube) is also an approved use for most formulations. Note on the oral tablet form (generic voriconazole tablets): that specific tablet formulation is approved for patients aged 12 to 14 years weighing at least 50 kg, and all patients 15 years and older — not for younger or smaller children. The oral suspension and the IV injection are approved for patients 2 years and older for most of these conditions.
