Ziprasidone falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Here's the short version: ziprasidone (Geodon) nudges serotonin signaling in your brain, and ergot alkaloids can act on those same serotonin receptors. Stack the two and, in theory, you raise the chance of too much serotonin activity. That's a condition called serotonin syndrome, which can show up as agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching or stiffness, and confusion.

I'll be honest with you, this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence and is mostly theoretical, so I don't want to scare you. But here's the bigger point: crude ergot is genuinely toxic and unsafe as a home supplement, period. Please don't take it. If you've been prescribed an ergot medicine for migraines or anything else, loop in your pharmacist or doctor so they can check it against your Geodon first.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Ziprasidone Used For?

Brand name: Geodon

Ziprasidone is prescribed for adults with schizophrenia and for adults experiencing manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder. It can be used on its own for acute manic or mixed episodes, or added to lithium or valproate to help maintain stability in bipolar I disorder long-term.

An injectable form is also available for rapid control of agitation in people with schizophrenia who need quick relief. Prescribers are advised to weigh ziprasidone's potential effect on heart rhythm when choosing among treatment options.
