European Barberry + Aliskiren
Aliskiren brand name: Tekturna.
Aliskiren falls into 2 drug categories that European Barberry can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking European barberry with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
European Barberry interacts with whole categories of medication. Aliskiren falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with European Barberry in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Aliskiren
Aliskiren falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal and human research suggests that European barberry extracts can have hypotensive effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: barberry (and its main alkaloid, berberine) seems to gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since aliskiren (Tekturna) is already lowering your blood pressure, stacking the two could push it down a little more than you want. This isn't about barberry changing how your body processes aliskiren. It's simply two things tugging in the same direction.
If your pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint, especially when standing up quickly. Keep in mind this interaction is theoretical, based on how barberry behaves in lab and some early human studies, so it's a caution, not an alarm. Before adding a barberry supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and don't change your aliskiren on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Aliskiren also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aliskiren (Tekturna), and the berberine in European barberry may slow that enzyme down a little. If aliskiren is broken down more slowly, slightly more of it can hang around in your system. Since aliskiren is a blood pressure medicine that isn't a prodrug, more of it generally means a stronger effect.
In real life that could show up as blood pressure dropping too low, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, or tired. The good news is that this concern is theoretical and based on early lab work, not on cases in actual patients. Still, before adding concentrated barberry or berberine supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aliskiren page
“Aliskiren (Tekturna) has one job, keeping blood pressure down, and most of this list pulls on that same rope. Of the 227 supplements with an interaction on file, 119 have blood-pressure effects of their own, stacking with the drug until pressure drops too far (fish oil is a common one) or pushing back against it.”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Aliskiren
What Is Aliskiren Used For?
Brand name: Tekturna
Aliskiren tablets — available as the brand Tekturna and as generic aliskiren — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Controlling blood pressure is most effective as part of a broader plan that may include healthy eating, exercise, reducing sodium, and managing other risk factors like cholesterol and blood sugar. Many people need more than one blood pressure medicine to reach their goal.

Aliskiren Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Aliskiren as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with European Barberry — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
