Warfarin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the situation with warfarin and False Unicorn. In a test tube, this herb appeared to slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear certain medications. In theory, slowing that enzyme could let some drug levels creep up. Warfarin is partly handled by this enzyme, so the concern is that your blood could become a bit too thin.

Warfarin is a tricky medication where small changes matter a lot. If levels rise, you could see easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious bleeding. I want to stress this is only a lab-based, theoretical concern with no real human proof, so don't panic. Still, given warfarin's narrow safety window, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
