Why this applies to Finasteride

Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP3A4. One in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP3A4 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this evidence conflicts with animal research suggesting that fo-ti does not inhibit CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Your body clears finasteride mostly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The idea here is that Fo-ti might slow that enzyme down a little, which could let more finasteride hang around in your system than usual. If that happened, you might notice more of its typical effects, such as lower sex drive, trouble with erections, or some breast tenderness.

The good news is that this is a very shaky concern. It only showed up in test-tube studies, animal research actually disagreed, and it has never been reported in a real person. Raw Fo-ti seems more likely to do this than processed forms. Finasteride also isn't a high-risk drug where small shifts cause trouble. Still, since Fo-ti has been tied to liver injury, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
