Ginkgo + Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate brand name: Viagra.
Sildenafil Citrate falls into 2 drug categories that Ginkgo can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, ginkgo might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ginkgo interacts with whole categories of medication. Sildenafil Citrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ginkgo in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ginkgo interacts with.
In vitro, a specific standardized extract of ginkgo leaf (EGb 761) inhibits CYP2C9 activity . The terpenoid (ginkgolides) and flavonoid (quercetin, kaempferol, etc.) constituents seem to be responsible for this effect. Most ginkgo extracts contain some amount of these constituents. Therefore, other ginkgo leaf extracts might also inhibit the CYP2C9 enzyme. However, clinical research suggests that ginkgo might not have a significant effect on CYP2C9 in humans. Ginkgo does not seem to significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of CYP2C9 substrates diclofenac or tolbutamide.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this one. In the test tube, ginkgo can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear sildenafil. If that pathway were blocked, sildenafil could hang around longer and hit harder, which might mean more of its usual effects like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a temporary drop in blood pressure.
But here's the reassuring part. This is only laboratory and theoretical data. In actual human studies, ginkgo did not meaningfully change levels of other CYP2C9 drugs, so a real-world problem is unlikely. Ginkgo's blood-thinning tendency is honestly a bigger thing to mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Sildenafil Citrate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
There is conflicting evidence about whether ginkgo induces or inhibits CYP3A4. Ginkgo does not appear to affect hepatic CYP3A4. However, it is not known if ginkgo affects intestinal CYP3A4. Preliminary clinical research suggests that taking ginkgo does not significantly affect levels of donepezil, lopinavir, or ritonavir, which are all CYP3A4 substrates. Other clinical research also suggests ginkgo does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity. However, there are two case reports of decreased efavirenz concentrations and increased viral load in patients taking ginkgo. It is suspected that terpenoids from the ginkgo extract reduced drug levels by inducing cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with combining ginkgo and sildenafil (Viagra). Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break sildenafil down, and ginkgo might speed that enzyme up a little. If it does, your body could clear the sildenafil faster, which in theory might make it work less well for an erection or for pulmonary hypertension. Sildenafil is not a prodrug, so this would mean weaker effect, not stronger.
That said, the evidence here is shaky and conflicting. Most studies suggest ginkgo doesn't meaningfully change CYP3A4 in the liver, so for many people this won't be a noticeable problem. One extra thing worth a mention: ginkgo can thin the blood, and sildenafil also affects blood vessels. It's a good idea to run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Ginkgo
What is Ginkgo?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Age-related mental decline
- Circulation problems
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Dizziness or vertigo
Ginkgo is one of the world's most popular herbal supplements, mostly taken to support memory and circulation. The evidence for these uses is mixed and generally weak, and it is not proven to prevent memory loss or dementia. It is usually well tolerated in healthy adults, but it can thin the blood, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Sildenafil
What Is Sildenafil Used For?
Brand name: Viagra
Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.
Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
