Evidence from in vitro research suggests that glyconutrients stimulate certain immune responses. Theoretically, glyconutrients might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Here's the basic idea with Soliris (eculizumab). It's a powerful medicine that quiets down part of your immune system to stop your body from destroying its own red blood cells, kidneys, or nerves. Glyconutrients are sugar supplements that some lab studies suggest might nudge the immune system in the opposite direction, toward being more active.

So in theory, taking these supplements could work against what Soliris is trying to do, possibly making your condition harder to control (think more fatigue, dark urine, or weakness flaring back). I want to be honest though: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not real patients, so it's very theoretical. Eculizumab isn't a prodrug, so this is about immune activity, not how the drug is broken down. Still, since this is a serious medication, please run any supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

About Eculizumab Injection

What Is Eculizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Soliris

Soliris (eculizumab) injection is approved to treat four serious conditions: paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare blood disorder that causes red blood cell destruction; atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), a condition that causes abnormal blood clotting in small blood vessels; generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), a neuromuscular disease causing muscle weakness; and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), an inflammatory disease affecting the optic nerves and spinal cord.

For gMG, Soliris is approved for adults and children 6 years and older who test positive for anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. For NMOSD, Soliris is approved for adults who test positive for anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies. Soliris is not indicated for hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC-HUS).
