Glyconutrients and Prednisolone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Prednisolone

Prednisolone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Glyconutrients interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that glyconutrients stimulate certain immune responses. Theoretically, glyconutrients might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing glyconutrients with prednisolone. Prednisolone is a steroid that calms down an overactive immune system, which is exactly why it's used for things like arthritis flares, allergic reactions, lung problems, or protecting a transplanted organ. Glyconutrients, on the other hand, are marketed as supplements that may stimulate the immune system. So in theory, they could work against what your prednisolone is trying to do.

I want to be honest with you: this concern is theoretical and comes only from lab dish studies, not from people. We have no real-world reports of it causing problems. Still, if you're relying on prednisolone for something serious, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding these, rather than risking a weaker response to your medication.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prednisolone page

“Prednisolone quiets inflammation and dampens the immune system, and its list of 202 interacting supplement and herbal ingredients, four of them rated major, deserves a careful read rather than a shrug. Grapefruit can push prednisolone levels up by blocking its breakdown, St.”

About Glyconutrients

What is Glyconutrients?

  • General immune support
  • Overall wellness and energy
  • Cognitive or memory support
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive health

Glyconutrients are supplements containing certain sugar molecules (monosaccharides) that marketers claim are essential for cell communication and health. The science behind most health claims is weak and largely promotional, and your body already makes these sugars from a normal diet. They are generally low-risk, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using them, and don't rely on them to treat any disease.

About Prednisolone

What Is Prednisolone Used For?

Brand names: Prednisolone, Sterane, Delta Cortef, Cortalone, Pred Forte, Solupred

Prednisolone is prescribed for many different conditions where inflammation or an overactive immune system is causing harm. These range from severe allergic reactions and asthma to certain skin diseases, blood disorders, eye problems, and some cancers.

It is also used to support the body when the adrenal glands aren't making enough of their own steroids, and to manage flares of conditions like ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition causing protein loss in the urine).
